Gold Vinyl Keepsake Box

Gold Vinyl Keepsake Box Tutorial | Brittany Sazonoff for Silhouette

For those of you who have seen any of my projects from the last year know that I’m a big fan of the dark-stained wood and gold combo. With the start of a second-year I figured why not bring back a familiar feel in a new way. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I have a necessity for multiple size storage boxes for multiple uses in my house. Especially for photos & keepsakes. That left me thinking… I can go out and buy some, or I can make my own. (Or rather, decorate some pre-made wooden storage boxes).

Depending on the size of your craft box, start by measuring the surface in which you plan to cover with the Silhouette Adhesive Matte Vinyl. To save you the hassle of resizing or fitting I would suggest picking a background design that is already size larger than your project. I knew I wanted my pattern to run from the top of the box down the front so I cut one solid pattern with my CAMEO.

Once your project is set up in Silhouette Design Studio, prep your cut settings and CAMEO, and then send it to cut! Be sure the following settings are correct before sending your vinyl through:

  • In Silhouette Studio, check that the cut settings are set for Vinyl and physically change your blade to a 2.
  • On your CAMEO, follow the instructions on the lid of your machine and move the rollers into the notch that matches the width of your vinyl. Sometimes these are a little tricky to get moved, but will. Also make sure to lock your roller bar back into place with the blue lever.
  • On the digital screen on your CAMEO, be sure to also select “LOAD MEDIA” vs “LOAD WITH CUTTING MAT”

Once all these settings are in place, you are good to cut!

After your pattern has been cut, using the Hook Tool, weed out all the extra bits of vinyl that are not part of your final design until only your pattern remains.

Cut a piece of Transfer Material sized accordingly with your design, and use the Scraper tool to smoothly attach your transfer material to the vinyl. Using the Transfer Material grid will help keep things in line.

Once you peel back the Transfer Material, the vinyl should have transfered from its originally sheet. Place your design sticky side down on your wooden box and use the scraper tool once more to burnish on your design. Repeat this step until all the areas you want covered have your vinyl design on them.

After all parts are in place, use an exacto knife around the edges to trim any excess vinyl. I did not put a protective coat over mine, but I’m sure there are a variety of ways to strengthen the durability if need be. I also run across my lid, so I had to use my exacto to split the vinyl down that dividing line.

And there we have it! A cute little place to keep the bits and pieces you favor the most. What kind of storage are you in most need of? Think about it and then give those things a new handmade home! Happy Crafting!

Brittany Sazonoff

Hi friends, both old and new! My name is Brittany (of BSaz Creates) and I am so excited to be joining the Silhouette Creative Team for another year! Outside of the Creative Team, I am freelance designer and creative living out my life-long affair with crafts in Chicago, IL. I have used my Silhouette CAMEO for projects small and large. From invitations to storefront windows, Silhouette has expanded my capabilities as a one-woman design studio in so many ways. When I'm not working on a project (or even when I am) you can almost always find me eating ice cream and cuddling with my pint sized pup, Brody, who makes quite the appearance on my instagram. I can't wait to continue to share my projects with you all!

  1. So pretty, Brittany! I think I need to go add gold to something, anything, in my house now. 😉

    1. Do ittt! 😉

  2. Oh I have so many I’ve bought (hoarded) to decorate for that ” perfect” project that inspired me, until other’s were put in front of my needs! Love wooden boxes. Scored an old wooden 2 sided Rolodex, 1 side with bar already removed last week. Have another file type box, from a cigar company ,to spiff up too.
    Great inspiration!

    1. That’s incredible! I love thrifting old boxes too. Good to find a fellow wooden box hoarder. 😉

  3. I love this pattern and it looks so elegant on your wooden box! Thank you for giving me a good shot of motivation!

    1. Thank you Marilyn!
