Sketch Fill Scrapbook layout

Hi everyone! I’m excited to share this tutorial with you today.  I like creating backgrounds on my layouts, and I don’t just mean with patterned paper.  I like to use Silhouette Sketch Pens.  If you haven’t tried them yet you don’t know what you’re missing!! They are super fun & easy to use.

Here’s the layout that I created using the sketch pens.

I recently took my kids on a little hike in the woods so when I came across this tree design I thought it would be perfect for this picture.

I opened the design in my Silhouette program (I have the Designer Edition).  Then I flipped the image horizontally.

Then, I resized it to fill up a big chunk of space on my 12 x 12 page.

Now for the fun part, the sketching!!!

I clicked on the sketch symbol, and on the right side I selected pencil for the edge.

I could have left it there and just sketched the outside of the design, but this time I wanted to fill things in to give a bit more depth and colour to my layout.

So, in the same window, I scrolled down to the Fill Sketch and selected Pencil once again.

To get the look I wanted, I had to do some fiddling around with the settings.  So I scrolled down on the right side bar to the Advanced settings.

There are 3 different areas that you can slide the bars which result in changing the lines of the sketch.

  • I went to the Fill Type section and slid the bar for Offset to 0.021.
  • Then I changed the Spacing all the way to the left (0.059 in.)
  • Then I played with the Width a bit (0.087 in.)

These simple changes filled up the space wonderfully.  It does take a bit of playing around and practicing. When you give this a try, make sure to slide the bars slowly because a lot can happen with a very slight motion.

Next, I added some hiking boots (duplicated it 3 times) to the page and repeated the same sketch procedure from above.

At this point it was just about ready to send to the Silhouette for all of the action to take place, but first I had to switch out the blade for a sketch pen.

After I changed the blade to the sketch pen I opened the Cut Settings window. Then, I selected Silhouette Sketch Pens from the right side menu.(Don’t panic when your image changes colour and you can’t see all of those sketch lines. They are still there!)

Next, I clicked on ‘send to Silhouette’ at the bottom.  These images were large, so the sketching took quite a while.  Patience is a virtue though, right? (who am I kidding I hated waiting!!)

But when it was done it looked fabulous!

Once my background was sketched I cut out a few more elements, including my title, with the Silhouette and added them to the page. Using different materials like Silhouette vellum, adhesive cardstock and corrugated cardstock added more texture and interest to my layout.

Here are some close up pictures of the details.

HI there! I’m Cari Locken from Langley, BC, Canada. I’m a wife and mother of 3 amazing kids! I have been crafting since I was a child and love the creative outlet that this hobby brings to me. My formal training is in the area of music as I have a Masters degree in Music and I am currently teaching Band (to Grades 5, 6 & &) as well as private piano lessons. However I always find time to dig out my scrappy supplies and work on a few projects here & there. I love creating scrapbook layouts, preserving the everyday moments and special memories of our family life as well as creating cards & home decor items . Other than scrapbooking I enjoy spending time watching my children play sports, reading, knitting, photography and cooking. I’m thrilled to be a part of the Silhouette Team!
