Donut Day Coffee Mug Using Vinyl

Do you donut or do you doughnut? Either way, both the donut and doughnut are being celebrated today!

It’s also my wedding anniversary and I just couldn’t bring myself to not merge the two together and craft my husband something unique. I whipped up this quick and easy Donut Day Coffee Mug and elected to serve my husband homemade Chocolate Glazed Cake Donuts for the morning of our special day.

To recreate a mug of your own, you simply pull up a variety of fonts from the Silhouette Design Store and start playing around! The “coffee” is a design all on its own rather than a font and I’ve included it below. The “DONUTS” is the Rockwell Extra Bold.

Once you get your fonts picked out and your design spaced the way you like it, select the design by dragging a box around it, right click and select “group”. This will allow you to move the entire design around at the same time

Next, load the vinyl into your Cameo or Portrait and select vinyl in the cut settings window. Then, click send to Silhouette and you are just about done!

Once it is cut out, remove the negative space (definitely going to need the hook tool for those small letters) and use transfer tape to easily adhere the vinyl to your mug.

  1. I have done several mugs but find the vinyl lifts away after about 5 or 6 months. I don’t have a dishwasher. It’s all hand washing and I’m careful but still it peels away. Is there a way to prevent this?

  2. Very cute! Happy Anniversary!

  3. I am curious how the vinyl holds up with use and washing regularly?

  4. Great project! Thanks so much.

  5. Yes, I too am very curious about the vinyl with washing.. I’m sure in the dishwasher is a no no , but by hand ?? might have to give it a whirl this week and make the mug my cup for all drinks , hot and cold and test how it works… 🙂

    1. I find the vinyl begins to peel after about 4-5 months (hand washing). I don’t know of any way to make the vinyl more permanent. If anyone has solutions to this, hopefully they will share.

      1. Thank you , that help a lot.. I agree, it would be nice for it to last longer..

  6. Does it have to be self-adhesive vinyl?

  7. I’ve read somewhere that using OUTDOOR vinyl works best! It is a stronger hold than regular vinyl.

I’ve yet to try it though!

    1. There is a Wensco in my area so I get my vinyl from them. They have the highest quality sign vinyl on the market today. That is all I generally use. And it does eventually come off with washing. All of the signs I’ve done hold up well but it peels off of the coffee cups within a few weeks.

  8. my vinyl peeled away after the first wash. as soon as the mug dries, the vinyl is secure again. i’m very disappointed!!! is there something i’m doing wrong?

  9. I have done a few mugs since my post above and it works perfect.. Use Outdoor Vinyl …
I did not prep the mug before putting the vinyl on , just made sure it was clean by washing and drying.

You have to make sure you use Outdoor Vinyl or it will peel off …

To this date the vinyl is st stuck on my mugs perfectly

  10. I use outdoor commercial vinyl from Wensco. After about 6 months it peels off.
