Vintage Weathered Sign

I don’t know about you, but when I think of Spring I always think of soft pastel colors and flowers. I love adding fun signs around my home for each season and this Spring inspired DIY Vintage Sign is such a fun addition. Even though we still have snow in the forecast, inside things are bright, fresh, and full of sunshine.

The key to create a vintage looking sign is to mimic the look of layered paint.  To create this look I started with an unfinished wood plaque from the craft store. I started painting on different layers of paint, allowing each layer to dry completely.

After my final layer was ready, I designed and cut a vinyl stencil using the font LW Fabulous with my CAMEO. After applying the adhesive vinyl, you can paint the lettering.

Remove the stencil and allow the paint to dry. (Optional: I also added a little black paint to the right side of the lettering with a little brush by hand for some fun shadowing.) When the paint is dry, distress the sign with sandpaper. This allows all those beautiful layers to show through.

That’s it!  A fun and easy diy vintage sign.

As a recent first time home buyer, I enjoy making our house into a home while sticking to a budget (gotta love those student loans!) This usually requires me to think outside the box and get creative. I love sharing my tutorials and projects in hopes that I can inspire others. When I am not crafting, I like to read, shop, watch movies, and visit with family & friends. Most importantly, I love spending time with my husband of 12 years and our two children who keep us on our toes.

  4. Very cute.

When you applied the stencil material did you use a transfer material? Is the stencil material tack on back or did you apply anything to help it adhere to your project board?

    1. Thanks, I created a stencil using the adhesive back vinyl and used the transfer paper to move it from my cutting mat to my wood. Once I had the letters painted I just peeled up the vinyl. Super easy. 🙂

  5. This is so pretty! I need to try this paint-layering technique. Thanks for the inspiration, Marie!
