Advent Calendar

Have you ever used an advent calendar to countdown during the holidays?adventcalendar2|Cari Locken for Silhouette copyThe design comes with an envelope shape and numbers for you to create a calendar for 24 days.  I chose to just do the 12 Days of Christmas as my theme because I wanted to create a little mini book that my children could use.

First I opened the file up in Silhouette.

Then I duplicated the envelope shape so that I could cut 2 out of one piece of cardstock.

I wanted to use red & green card stock for the numbers (and alternate them) so I arranged the numbers accordingly and then cut them out of the card stock. (red numbers on top and green on the bottom )

After all of the envelope shapes were cut out I began to fold them along the perforated lines and adhered the edges together.

Here is a look at the adhered ‘plain’ envelope.

I then took each number and removed the cut out bits using the Silhouette Hook tool.  (sometimes just tapping your finger on the back of the adhesive card stock removes some of the small bits & pieces too).

I then adhered the numbers on the top of the envelope.

For the inside of each envelope I decided to cut some white card stock and print off a family activity that we could do each day.  I intended to use the Silhouette Scratch -off Sticker Sheets so I tried my best to plan out the spacing.

I used a star shape and cut out 12 of them from the Silhouette Scratch-off Sticker Sheet.

Now it was time for the fun part!!!  Hiding the fun activities with the stars.  (TIP: this could be the last step you do before adding the cards into each envelope.  Make sure you put your cards into order before adding the star shape (otherwise you won’t be able to do that once they are all on!!!  And yes, I did that!! So the last card we might be scratching could quite possibly say ‘go hunting for the family christmas tree!!”)

Now it’s time to adhere the stars onto the cards.

After the cards were finished I decided to add some rhinestones to each of the envelopes.  In keeping with the red & green theme I had going on I used some green rhinestones on the red numbered days and red rhinestones on the green numbered days!

The final step for my little booklet was to add a tag.  I had assembled the book using some metal rings, tied a few strands of ribbon and then decided I wanted a tag with a bit of a title for this project.

So I found a tree shape tag.

I opened up the text box and created a title.

I then went to Line color and changed it to black.

Then I opened up the Fill Window and changed that to black as well.  This allows you to send it through your printer to print out the words.

Then I went to the Cut Window and selected no cut for the text.

It is now time to go to the Registration Marks window and select which machine you have from the top drop down menu.

Once you select your machine (mine is Cameo) then the registration marks will automatically appear. You can then play with the inset of the registration marks if you need to.

I decided to just change my paper size and then registration marks would then not fill the entire page.

I then sent it to my printer to be printed first (just click on the little printer icon on the top left bar).

After it had printed I placed the paper on the cutting mat and sent it through my Cameo to be cut.

I then attached the tag to the metal ring on the little booklet. Voila!

My kids can’t wait to start scratching and finding out what exciting things we’ll be doing together to celebrate the festive season.

To give you a peek at how the Scratch-off sticker works I revealed the hidden message behind one of the cards (no. 1).

Cari Locken

HI there! I’m Cari Locken from Langley, BC, Canada. I’m a wife and mother of 3 amazing kids! I have been crafting since I was a child and love the creative outlet that this hobby brings to me. My formal training is in the area of music as I have a Masters degree in Music and I am currently teaching Band (to Grades 5, 6 & &) as well as private piano lessons. However I always find time to dig out my scrappy supplies and work on a few projects here & there. I love creating scrapbook layouts, preserving the everyday moments and special memories of our family life as well as creating cards & home decor items . Other than scrapbooking I enjoy spending time watching my children play sports, reading, knitting, photography and cooking. I’m thrilled to be a part of the Silhouette Team!
