Make A One Of A Kind Mint Stamp Mug

Who likes to drink hot beverages out of pretty mugs? I do!!  I’m here to show you how to make your very own one of a kind mug using your Silhouette Mint™ and Sihouette CAMEO®.

I’ve been having fun experimenting with standard materials but using them in new ways.  For this project good old plain white tissue paper is what I’m transforming into something new and exciting.

Supplies needed:

  • mug
  • tissue paper
  • Mint™ machine
  • 15 mm x 15 mm stamp
  • Mint ink, various colors
  • permanent adhesive vinyl, various colors
  • transfer tape
  • Silhouette CAMEO®
  • dishwasher safe Mod Podge
  • foam brush
  • Design Store ID #153157, #58727

Step One:  Create your custom stamp

Check out this amazing tutorial showing the step by step instructions if you are new to making stamps.

I used this simple floral design by Rhonna Farrer as my stamp design.

Step Two: Stamp your tissue paper

I used several ink colors for my fun stamp and let it soak in for about 10 minutes before stamping off the excess.  Once its stamping cleanly move over to your tissue paper and stamp away.  I kept my design close together so it read as a print.

Step Three:  Cut out your tissue paper shape

I did attempt to use my CAMEO to cut the tissue paper but unfortunately it’s too thin.  I had this cute clipboard (that actually inspired this project) so I used it to trace a flower base shape to build upon with vinyl on my mug.  I simply traced it with my pencil and cut it out using scissors.

Step Four:  Create your vinyl design

I might be slightly obsessed with all things Amy Robison (who isn’t?) so when I wanted to do a fun floral mug I knew which designer to turn to for the vinyl design.  I used her spring bouquet design to get the parts needed for my vinyl.

This is where you will test your tracing skills, I know you can do it! If you need a refresher read up on this helpful tracing tutorial.

I’m just going to show you a couple quick screen shots showing you how I broke out the flower parts.

The design has two images, you’ll want to use the top one:

Trace the design:

Ungroup it to get the individual parts.  You will need to do this a few times to get each design section needed.

You’ll need to use the eraser and point editing tools to get clean shapes.  Here’s a quick helpful guide if you’re new to point editing.

Ready to cut!  I chose to keep it simple using two vinyl colors.

Step Five:  Assemble your mug

Now is when you put all those fun pieces together.  I used dishwasher safe Mod Podge to attach the tissue paper to the mug first.  Dab a small bit on the clean mug so your paper will stick to it.

Lay your tissue down on top and gently coat it with a layer of Mod Podge.  Let it dry for about an hour then go back and do a second coat.  (I used that time to design my vinyl cut outs)

Tip: While it’s still wet I used a damp paper towel to clean up any excess paste around the edges.

Now use your transfer tape to attach your vinyl designs to your mug.  See this tutorial for any help needed on how to do this part.

Step Six:  Admire your work

Pour yourself a hot beverage to enjoy in your new amazing mug.  Cheers!!
