Happy New Year! A new year for me means new projects. A whole year of new projects– amirite? To get your creative juices flowing, I’m going to be doing a round-up of one of my most favored project categories in the Silhouette Store. Beyond the world of vinyl and paper lives a little section of Specialty Media that my heart beats hard for. Here you’ll find a variety of materials– from printable magnet paper and glitter to gold foil, tattoo paper, and beyond. These unique materials are sure to amp up your creativity and this round-up will get you thinking of how to use those materials outside of the box.
Below you’ll find projects for some of my top product picks, as well as a cry for all the new Specialty Media products I wish I had asked Santa for. Sigh. Let’s get started!
Silhouette’s temporary tattoo paper is hands down one of my favorite Specialty Media products, so let’s start here. From using it to create custom tattoos for a variety of parties, to jumping outside of the box and applying it to wood as I did above, it’s the bomb. For this Tattoo Paper Photo Transfer I simply applied the same method of adhering the tattoo paper to wood as I would skin, creating a photo transfer that still adorns my apartment to this day, and is still one of my favorite unique uses to date. You can get the full tutorial for this tattoo paper transfer here.
Glow-In-The-Dark Sticker Paper– Hello nostalgia! If you were anything like me as a kid, at one point your bedroom ceiling was adorned with glow in the dark stars to lie down under after you were done with your Spice Girls dance parties. Toned down a bit, I have to admit that seeing this Glow-In-The-Dark star garland glow brought back some childhood feels and made me want to make all the things glow. It’s also printable. WHAT?! You can get the full post for this garland here.
I’m always looking for ways to step-up my gift wrap game, and let me tell you- this one’s a winner. Cut out an intricate design out the Printable Cotton Canvas and use it to adorn the outside of a package or gift tag. The best part is, this material is also adhesive, essentially allowing you to create cotton canvas stickers of all types. Being printable, the possibilities with this product are endless. You can see how I printed photos for a banner onto the cotton canvas here and for the Cotton Canvas Gift Wrap seen above, visit here.
Calling all Curio™ lovers + admirers alike. Whether you own the Curio or are still eyeing it from afar, knowing that it offers the ability to emboss and deboss is an awesome feature of this particular machine. This post isn’t about the Curio™ though, so let me introduce to you Silhouette’s Score & Emboss Paper. Made especially for the Score & Emboss feature, this soft, thick stock will make any emboss project look incredible. Adding this subtle texture/design to these baby shower invitations added just the right amount of richness and dimension. You can find this Debossed Babyshower Invitation here.
While I could go on and on about each and every product in the Silhouette Store, I’d hate to cut into your creative time so let’s end things with one of the products I have found most useful for a variety of projects. From upcycling garage-sale chairs, to custom front door mats and mugs, Silhouette’s Stencil Material is where it’s at. I remember when Silhouette first released this product how impressed I was. The crisp, clean lines you can achieve from this durable and adhesive material is stand out. The fact that the material is also reusable is a bonus. For me, the adhesive quality allowed for the design to stay in place and is one of my favorite features. For some projects though, an non-adhesive stencil would be ideal. Well, friends, have no fear- Silhouette’s got you covered for that too. For the full how-to on this Hand Drawn Mug Stencil, visit here.
Being on the design team for a few years now I’ve been lucky enough to get to test a lot of these products and materials first hand. Some of my other favorites are the Adhesive Kraft Paper, Chipboard, and Printable Magnet Paper. Within the last year, Silhouette has begun to introduce new products – a lot of them falling into the Specialty Media category and I’m excited to get my hands on them. Top contenders for me, though they all seem awesome, are the Wood and Cork Sheets, the Window Cling Material, and the Printable Vinyl. New year, new products, new projects – let’s do this.
