“Hidden Image” Halloween Treat Bags

With Halloween on the horizon, I thought, “what better way to celebrate the season then to make some cute treat bags?”

These are perfect for Halloween parties or even for those neighborhood Trick or Treaters.

These glow in the dark “hidden” images will surely impress all those who lay eyes on them!

  • Silhouette Stencil Vinyl
  • Silhouette Fabric Ink  – Glow in the dark, orange & black
  • Foam Brush
  • Silhouette Hook Tool
  • Silhouette Scraper Tool
  • Treat Bags (I got mine from Hobby Lobby)

Step 1: Create Your Designs in Silhouette Studio

Start off with a blank page. In the Design Page Settings window select “Letter 8.5 x 11.0 in” and Cutting Mat “None.”

Open the designs you would like to use. I used several designs: 4 as background “hidden” images (that I painted glow in the dark), and 4 phrase images (that I painted black.)

Background: Design ID #94059, 21539, 97473, 49486

Phrases: Design ID #151496, 146894, 146885, 151502

Drag to resize the images to fit the bags that you are using. I used muslin fabric party bags from Hobby Lobby and resized my images to 4″ x 5″.

For the “3 Halloween Ghosts” cut file I only used one of the ghosts. To separate them, right click and select “ungroup.” This will separate the images.

Arrange the designs on your page to make the most out of your stencil material.

Note: I colored the designs (for visual purposes only) to show you the glow-in-the-dark backgrounds (yellow) and phrases (black). You do not need to do this for your project.

Step 2: Cut Your Designs on Stencil Vinyl & Prep Your Stencils

In the Cut Settings window select “Vinyl” and set your blade to the indicated setting. (Use the regular vinyl settings in the Silhouette software.)

Once cut, carefully remove the inside of the design with your Silhouette hook tool, creating a stencil.

Apply the clear transfer tape to the designs and rub it with your Silhouette scraper tool.

Next, cut the designs with scissors to separate them from each other. Once separated, peel the transfer tape with your design attached off of the vinyl liner (it’s tan colored.)

Apply your transfer tape to your bags and rub the design onto the bag with your scraper tool. Carefully remove the clear transfer tape leaving the vinyl stencil on your project.

Step 3: Apply the Fabric Ink.

Apply the fabric ink to the treat bags in two separate steps.

First, apply the glow in the dark ink to the background image on each bag. (I added a piece of yellow cardstock inside of my bag before applying the ink, in case of any bleeding.)

Once dry, carefully peel off the stencil. Use an iron to set the ink. (I used the cotton setting on my iron and it worked fine.)

Once the background images are all dried and set with the iron, place the phrase stencil on your bag and apply the black ink to that stencil.

Repeat the same process with your other bags. Once the ink is dry, peel off the stencil and set with your iron.

If you want to go the extra mile you can even paint your handles / ties like I did! I just used orange fabric ink and a foam brush.

Step 4: Add Candy & Treats!

The final and most important step…add goodies to your treat bags!

Processed with Snapseed.

They are especially cute in the dark…perfect for those Trick or Treaters!
