Tiling with Silhouette Studio Business Edition

All Things Text Tool: Silhouette Studio Tutorial

Today we are talking all-things software! One of the main reasons I purchased a Silhouette CAMEO® a few years ago was because of Silhouette Studio®. I was familiar with other editing programs, but I was worried that learning an additional software would be time consuming. Boy was I wrong!

Silhouette Studio® was designed with the user in mind! Within a few minutes of toying around in the software, I was able to make my first cut. I quickly realized that there were so many fun features that I wanted to learn all about and once I felt like I mastered Silhouette Studio®, I upgraded to Silhouette Studio® Designer Edition.

Before we get started on this lesson, I wanted to go over the differences in our software. This comparison convinced me to upgrade to Designer Edition and quickly thereafter I upgraded to Business Edition (and I am not a business owner)!

Silhouette Studio® Designer Edition

Silhouette Studio® Designer Edition is the version of the Silhouette software made especially for designers. The Designer Edition includes more features to help designers import their own artwork as well as create new designs for use with Silhouette products. Click here for further information.

Silhouette Studio Designer Edition Plus

Silhouette Studio® Designer Edition Plus provides additional features to import major embroidery file types (PES, DST, EXP, JEF, and XXX) into Silhouette Studio® and unlocks advanced rhinestone features. Designer Edition Plus simply adds to the Designer Edition version, so if you already own the Designer Edition and plan to purchase Designer Edition Plus, you only pay for the difference from your previous version. Designer Edition Plus includes all Designer Edition features. Click here for further information.

Silhouette Studio® Business Edition

Silhouette Studio® Business Edition is a version of the Silhouette Studio® software program that users may upgrade to. It is intended for small business users who want to unlock and explore further features of the software, like multi-cutting support, weed line options, and advanced nesting features. It is designed for full-scale, large-quantity projects and helps users save time on designing and cutting out extensive amounts of material.

Now that you are all so excited about Business Edition, I am going to share one of my favorite tools!

Have you ever wanted to create a massive wall decal but thought, my CAMEO can’t cut wider than 12 inches?! Well we are here to help! I am going to share how to easily cut large images using the tiling feature in Silhouette Studio®.

1

Begin by opening a design from your Silhouette Library. I chose design #84967.

2

Next, adjust your design page settings to be the same size as the area you would like to place your design. For this example, I adjusted my page area to 36 inches by 36 inches. Then click on the Media Layout button. This will cause your screen to split into two views: design view and media layout view.

3

As you can see your image is way too big to fit on your mat. I usually cut my vinyl without a mat, but for the purposes of this tutorial, I left the mat image so that we could see just how big our image was compared to our 12 inch by 12 inch mat. Next click on the open media layout button. Our media is currently set as 36 inches by 36 inches in our software. But what if I was to cut vinyl sheets that are only 12 inches by 12 inches?

4

I simply just need to adjust the size in the media layout section. I changed my media to 12 inches by 12 inches and it shrunk down to the correct size without manipulating my original image.

Great, my media fits my mat, but my image is way too big–now what!? That is where tiling comes into play.

Open the tiling window and prepare to be amazed. Click Tiling Active and choose the automatic grid option. The tiles will automatically appear over your image and in the media layout view you will see each tile on separate mats making it so simple to send your job to your Silhouette machine when you are ready.

6

Here is a close up view of an individual tile on the mat. If you look closely, when we tiled the image, Silhouette Studio automatically added cut lines to the edge of the design. This will make transferring your job super easy-peasy once it has been cut.

7

Now you are ready to cut! Select the individual tile you would like to cut and send the job to your Silhouette machine!

  1. Yay! I never thought I wanted/needed the business edition until I saw your video. Why do things the long way when the software can cleverly do it for you? 🙂

  2. Super tutorial. Love this.

  3. Great tutorial, thanks for sharing Karley! I am considering upgrading to the business edition – but I would be cutting cardstock, not vinyl, in large designs for party table props and photo background props – so would this cutting feature work for something like this? Would there be seams in all my tiled cuts that would need to be assembled?

  4. Karley, Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You are awesome! I have been wanting to cute a large tree for my wall and use it to hang family pictures on it. (Family Tree) Now, I think I can do it! You made it look so easy. Thank you again! <3
