Turning Stamp Sets Into Cut Files

Turning Stamp Sets Into Cut Files

With the new PixScan™  technology you can create and save cut files for your stamp sets. No need for fussy cutting them out with your scissors anymore! Perfect, right?!

Here’s a quick look at how it works using your camera phone:

  • Stamp the images on your choice of material
  • Place your stamped material on the PixScan™  mat inside the black rectangle outline and take a photo with your phone
  • Upload the photo to your computer
  • Open Silhouette studio and click on the ‘open pixscan image’ button in the upper left corner

  • Now it’s time to import your photo
  • In the PixScan window click the arrow next to ‘Import from File’ & ‘Import PixScan Image from File’

  • Find your image file and click ‘open’
  • Now, you’ll see your image in Silhouette studio, just as it appears on the mat.

  • Next, open the trace window, click ‘select trace area’ and drag your mouse over the stamped images
  • Adjust the settings until your stamped images are highlighted and click ‘trace outer edge’

  • Now you’ll see a cut line around each of your stamped images. You can zoom in and double click the line if you need to edit the points for any reason.

  • Load the mat into your Silhouette
  • Select your cut settings as you’d usually do in the Cut Settings window, then send to Silhouette
  • Your machine will read the registration marks on the mat and cut out the stamped images

Now, so that you don’t have to create new cut lines each time you stamp your image, you can save this cut file in your library.

  • Go to file > save as > save t o library

Next time you use the stamp set just cut the shapes out of white cardstock and you’re ready to stamp!

  1. Can you teach how to calibrate for camera? My images cut to far to the right, so I am guessing I need to calibrate. If there is something else I can do to compensate, please advise

    Thank You

    1. Hi Sharon,

There are more tutorials coming soon, but in the meantime our customer support team can help. It may be as simple as calibrating your print and cut, but they are happy to help you get it figured out 🙂 They can be reached at support@silhouetteamerica.com

    2. If its cutting too far to the right, its your Silhouette that needs to be calibrated, not your camera. Instructions are in the manual (under the Help menu) but its hard to find the calibration command in V3…Click on the Send to SIlhouette button then right click in the panel to find it.

  2. I am running 3.0 Design Studio. How do I download 3.1 with PixScan? When I check for updates, it says no updates available.

    1. Hi Emily,

You can find the latest updates here. 🙂

  3. Hi Debra!

You’ll want to take a picture of the entire mat, making sure the registration marks on the mat are clear in the photo. 🙂 Have fun!!

  4. Hi Sam,

It’s available for retailers now, so I’d check with your local store to see when they will be getting it in. Here’s a list of stores, if you need it. 🙂

  5. Every time I try this, it says it can not calibrate. I don’t know what this means. Can you explain it to me?

    1. Hi Susan,

If it isn’t automatically calibrating, you will need to do that manually. Our customer support team would be happy to walk you through the calibration process. You may email them at support@silhouetteamerica.com

  6. Hi Yvonne,

Sorry for the frustrations! It’s hard to trouble shoot through comments, so if you are aligning the mat to the right of the loading guide mark and it still isn’t working, I would recommend a quick phone call to customer support, or email them with a phone number and a good time to reach you.

  7. Hi Yvonne,

  8. Cameo Silhouette isn’t reading registration marks. How do I calibrate the Silhouette? Thank you.

  9. Each time I try to use the Pixscan I get 2 different error messages.
When trying to import an image I get the following message:
“No calibration Profile could be found to match the photograph being imported. In cases where no calibration profile is used, the cut line accuracy can be adversely affected.”

Then when I try to calibrate the camera image I get the following message:

“Could not import the Pixscan Calibration image. Please retake the photograph ensuring good lighting conditions.Ensure the grid of dots is approximately aligned to the image.”

I have even tried 2 different cameras to no avail. The image will not cut properly and it seems that the calibration has to happen. Please help.

  10. when i look for update it says there are no updates i am using 3.0 design edition but i need 3.1 to use the pixscan mat.

    1. Hi Margaret! You can find the latest version of the software on our website here.

  11. Is the Pixscan Mat really necessary? The tutorial steps are identical as for any scan/print and cut, so what is the advantage of the mat?

    1. Yes, in order to get the exact dimensions and the exact placement of the stamped images, it is necessary to have the PixScan mat.

  12. Is it true I don’t need to calibrate camera if I have an IPhone 5c? How do I tell the silhouette that is what I use? Does it read that from the pixscan JPEG file that I upload from my computer? Documentation on this process is very confusing . Too many assumptions that everyone is a seasoned cutter, but I want to learn. Help!

    1. Hi Debra,
