Thursday’s Sketch :: Shape Up or Ship Out

Hi there!  It’s Jen, back with another Thursday’s Sketch for you {sorry about my hiatus last week}…

If any of you follow us on Instagram {@silhouetteamerica}, then you know that today’s sketch was inspired by a super cute print and cut that I found in the Silhouette online store.  Sometimes an adorable shape triggers an idea for a project, and in this case, it inspired this week’s sketch!

I just loved the circles in the print and cut file, and thought it would be cute to incorporate a bunch of them on the layout.  I found another travel themed circle cut file that coordinated perfectly and I was set!
I just love the way it all came together. I created a “home” for all my little circles by drawing a 6 ¼” x 11” rectangle in Silhouette Studio.  {FYI my photo is 4 ¾” x 11”}   Then I filled it with circles slightly larger than my print and cuts and travel circles, and cut it out!
One of the reasons I love this sketch is that since the top is one huge picture, it allowed me to play up the embellishments and the color on the bottom of the page without losing focus on the photo. I also love it because sometimes it’s hard to know where to place embellishments on your layouts and make them look like they belong there.  I appreciate that the circle template functions as a design element as well as a guide for placing all those little bits and pieces. I used the negatives from the set of 4 travel icons, along with a few other cuts, some buttons, brads, and a bit of washi tape to fill in all the empty circles.  So fun!
With all that cute stuff going on at the bottom, I couldn’t neglect the top of my layout, so to balance my page, I added just a small cluster of embellishment to the top left of my photo. {aren’t those paper sequins so cute?!}

This sketch worked great for my large, ocean-view photo, but I also think it would work well with two 4×6 photos or a bunch of smaller Instagram photos too.  I would also love to see it with other shapes {hexagons, hearts, or butterflies come to mind}…

 I hope you’ll give this sketch a try, and don’t forget to upload it to our Flickr group or post it on Instagram (#mysilhouettestory) so we can all be inspired by your creations!

    It is absolutely lovely and fun! I love your choice of colors to compliment your picture. I’ve noticed your use of drops of paint what inspired that? I have to say it is very unique :)

      Ana – Paint droplets have been a trend in the scrapbooking world that I’ve been loving for a while now! It adds just a little bit of an artsy flair and can add that extra touch without being too over the top. :) You should try it!

      Yes it definitely adds a unique and like you said artsy look. What type of paint would you recommend? I’m thinking regular acrylic? Thanks.

  3. Super cute! I love all the variety of elements you can pack on the page without making it look overdone.
