FREE Shape of the Week : Lace Border

This week's FREE shape includes 3 lace borders. I've used one of them here to create paper lace ribbon for gift wrapping...

When working with these lace borders, the weld tool will be your best friend. Here's how I created the border in the photo above...

First, I opened the shape and with the shape selected I clicked ungroup down at the bottom left of my screen and deleted the bottom two borders.

Then, I duplicated the remaining shape and overlapped the edges slightly.

Then, I opened the modify window and with both shapes selected clicked weld.

Next, so that the scallop border was on both the top and bottom, I selected the shape, opened the replicate window and selected mirror below.

Then, I overlapped those two shapes slightly and selected weld in the modify window.

You can make the border shape as long as you want by duplicating it and welding the ends. So, if you wanted to make a vinyl lace border for the wall in a nursery or little girls bedroom, totally do-able! Just keep welding.

Using the same welding technique, you can also add these borders and others in the online store to the bottom of tags, or cards.

Hope you have a great day... and enjoy your new shape!

  1. Thanks so much for reminding me to weld. I was working with another border the other day, and needed it longer and stretching it was making it way too fat. :) I'll remember this trick in the future. Thanks always for the free shapes! What a perk to choosing the silhouette over other cutters.

  3. This is clever about duplicating and welding below to make it wider. Thanks for sharing.

  6. I tried to do this, but every time I clicked "weld" the interior design disappeared and it only welded the outside border. I have tried doing it with a few border files and it has done the same thing each time. Could you please help me?

    1. Hi Kimberly, It is hard to tell without seeing your file, but if you repeat the steps and it still isn't working, I'd try contacing customer support at support@silhouetteamerica.com. They will be able to take a closer look, and are always happy to help. :)

As far as welding other border files and intricate shapes, because they are all designed differently, before trying to weld the intricate shapes to another, you'll want to be sure that the shapes are compound paths. {you can do that by selecting the entire shape, opening the modify window and selecting 'make' under compound paths.} Hope that helps! :)
