DIY Monogrammed Apron : Fabric Ink Tutorial

Happy Valentine's Day! To celebrate, tonight I'm having a little homemade pizza and pizookie party at my house with a few friends. Since there will be cooking and baking going on, I thought it only fitting for everyone to get their own monogrammed apron.

This project might have been on the verge of crazy if I were actually going to sew each one but, never fear, these are easy peasy!  :) To create them I used cloth napkins in fun bright colors, ribbon, a little lace, the Silhouette Portrait, and the fabric ink starter kit.

First, I stitched a row of lace to the bottom of the napkin.

Then, I stitched ribbon to the top of the napkin, one piece on each side.

Next, I designed my monogram in Silhouette studio. Then, I changed the paper size to 9", the width of the stencil vinyl.

I loaded the stencil vinyl into the Portrait. Then I opened the cut settings window in Silhouette studio and selected Vinyl from the menu.

I adjusted my blade according to the settings in Silhouette studio and clicked cut.

Once the stencil vinyl was cut, I weeded the shape using the hook tool, removing the pieces I wanted in ink on the apron.

Then, I covered the image in transfer paper, and used the scraper tool to make sure that all of the little pieces were attached and that there were no air bubbles.

Next, I removed the white backing and placed the stencil on the apron. Again, I used the scraper tool to smooth out the image and ensure that all of the pieces were adhered to the fabric.

Then I removed the clear transfer paper leaving just the stencil on the apron.

Next, using the sponge I applied a layer of white fabric ink. {depending on the weight of your fabric, you may want to place a piece of cardstock or cardboard under your project incase some of the ink goes through.}

After the ink was mostly dry, I removed the vinyl stencil using the hook tool. Then, I ironed over the image to heat set the ink.

These are so simple to make and would be a fun little addition to a children's baking party, or even a new neighbor gift.

If you haven't tried your hand at fabric ink, the starter kit is a great way to get started. More details on that here...

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you all have a wonderful heart filled holiday!

  2. These are adorable! And if you need a lot of them (ie for a kids' party), you can call party rental stores and see if they sell their used linens. I can buy linen napkins for 25 cents each from my local store. They are in great shape and have a good assortment of colors. Thanks for sharing! ~Kristen, Celebrate Every Day With Me
