Thursday Sketch...and paper flower tutorial

How about a card sketch for your Thursday...

Sometimes all it takes is a little sunshine to brighten someone's day. :)

My favorite part of making this card was the vintage paper flowers. Using the 12 petal flower shape from the online store I cut out 5 of the same size.  Then I sponged the edges, layered them on top of each other and secured them together with a brad. To make each layer a little easier to work with I spritzed them lightly with water. Then, one layer at a time I scrunched them into the middle. I let the flower dry and then started pulling down each layer until it had the look I wanted. Love the dimension this brings to my card, and so easy to do!

Happy card making friends!

  1. Hi,

Love the card - so pretty! Did you hand or machine sew the detail around the edge? If you hand sewed it, did you punch all of the needle holes ahead of time? I am trying to incorporate more sewing into my cards and I'm having a hard time with it. Thanks for any tips!

    1. Thanks Jen! I used the sewing machine this time, but when I do hand stitch I punch all of the holes first. It makes it go a little quicker. :)

      Have a great day!

  3. This is a really cute card but I have a question about giving cards with 3D items like the flower. How do you give it? Is it only for hand delivery with no envelope? I want to send one to someone but I've had the post office tell me it costs more postage if the envelope is too thick. I wasn't sure if this would even fit in an envelope. I've seen lots of cards like this and no one ever addresses how to mail it? TIA if you have an answer for me. Inquiring minds want to know. :D

  4. @nativetexangirl: Many people are using an envebox (or boxalope, if you prefer) to send thick cards with. See:

  5. Jeana--I love this way of making flowers! Spritzing them with water has made a huge difference for me the past month or two.

Donna--I only hand deliver cards like these, so when I do know I'm going to deliver it in person that's when I break out the "big" stuff like 3D flowers. The majority of my cards get mailed and I keep them flat. You can still do flowers; just rumple them and press them pretty flat again so they have texture but not bulk.

Barbara--how much more postage do you pay for mailing an envebox, and do you just put your address labels directly onto the decorative box?

    1. Thank you krafting kelly for the answer. I may try an envebox and see what the postage would be and then decide whether to go that route or not. I'd like to see if the box would arrive and not be all smashed too.

  6. Great layout and design. This would also make a great border for a scrapbook page. I really like the colors used in this card. Could you share the brand and names of the papers?

    1. Thanks Gayle!... the yellow floral is from Teresa Collins Fabrications line and the grey stripe is the Fiddlesticks "love" woodgrain paper in the Miss Caroline line from My Mind's Eye and the paper I used to create the flowers is from Basic Grey's basics.
