Tutorial: Vinyl Scalloped Border Striped Frame

February 28, 2011

Ok I know the title is a mouthful but trust me soooo worth it.  You have all asked for a PDF version of my tutorials, so I am super excited to bring to you my very 1st PDF tutorial. Yay!!!  For the full tutorial click here.  For those of you who want a little run down before you get started...read on!

Today I am creating a gorgeous painted wood frame with vinyl stripes. I started by copying and welding together shape: border_strip_scalloped_C20091204002559_20509, in order to make a long strip.

From there I copy and pasted the strip in equal measurements to span the width of the frame I would be adhering the vinyl to.

Of course my next step is to cut the vinyl.  My frame width is wider than the allotted 9" so I tiled the stripes as seen in the images below.  I cut one section and then the other section.

Now its time to weed the vinyl and transfer to the project using the transfer paper.

Trim the excess vinyl and you are ready to embellish.

Now you are ready to embellish or love it just the way it is. Again if you are looking for the full version of the tutorial, it can be found here.

One of my favorite products from Silhouette is the Heat Transfer material.  The Silhouette cuts it out like butta' and it is so easy to weed.  Everytime I have done a demonstration with it people oooh and ahhh over it.  In one word...Amazing!  I have shown you ways to use it on apparel and bags and other decor for your home, but I have never shown it on a pillow.  Im in love!  This great little Quatrefoil shape is super fun right now and creating a new pillow cover is as simple as cutting it out.

Simply measure your pillow covering and then map out in your Silhouette Studio software how far apart you want the medallions.  Then all you have to do is cut them out! Once you have it weeded, line it up on the covering and iron it!  Super simple and I makes a hug statement.

I used the flocked heat transfer in white.  You can see the raised soft texture from the picture above.  It feels so nice against the canvas weave.

Go out and try something new.  I think you will be amazed with what you come up with!

I am just a little ecstatic about today's project!  I grew up in a family where love floated everywhere.  I can't remember any one who didn't have a ton of love to give.  The women in my family are all incredibly talented, loving and kind.  I am pretty sure our family covers the creative gamut of everything handmade and super clever.  Yes this sounds like I am tooting the family horn, but truly it is to pay respect to the women in my life whom allowed me to think freely and become so interested in design.  I can always remember my grandma having something going on in her sewing room.  Whether it was a new pair of pajama pants for one of the grandkids or handmade teddy bears to squeeze, she was constantly working on a project.  I also remember the first time I was allowed to help tie one the quilts she had been working on.  I couldn't have been much older than my oldest daughter and I sat watching my Grandma, mom and aunts busily working, chatting and laughing to get the quilt all buttoned up.  Maybe this was the foundation of my love for many things.  Creating is a compilation of love and joy in life.

I'm pretty sure that's why I have such a love of quilting.  Each quilt tells a story I believe. Stories that tell of life that was and some that tell of life yet to be.  Patches and colors that speak to our hearts.  Some are beautifully elaborate and some are simple and timeless.  When it became possible to cut fabric with the Silhouette one of my first thoughts was to make a quilt.

This technique makes cutting out all those tedious shapes by hand  a whole lot easier and faster!  I created this quilt by using a pack of standard squares and using the new Silhouette Fabric Interfacing and the Silhouette to cut out each leaf shape from a nice cream cotton.  You can modify shape: leaf_1443 to be used as the leaf.  Good luck on your fabric adventures I can't wait to see what you create!

I hope you have a great Friday and a super relaxing weekend!  Ciao!

Darling Onesie

February 16, 2011

Cute little fabric onesies are all the rage right now in tiny baby couture and honestly I just can't get enough of them.  There is just something so sweet about a  sweet little baby and a funky animal stitched on a simple shaped onesie.  *Squeal* Oooh it makes me want to snuggle my sis-n-laws new little one!

Now the Silhouette makes it easy for you to design and create a few for your own little ones or anyone you may know, because lets face it its always fun to give a gift to a baby even if its not yours.  Here i took shape: animal_slow_woodland_turtle_C00863_19210 and used the outline as the base layer and the fun cutout shape as my top layer.  Because you can iron it on to your projects you can easily place and start stitching without the need of pins!  Seriously, the pins are half the battle sometimes.  From there I stitched the turtle to the onesie.  I love the little frayed edges that are created when you leave the raw fabric edge exposed.

Try out this new technique using our new fabric interfacing, I promise it will be sure to impress anyone who receives it.

Hilarious!  The guys around the office were making mock commentary when I showed them this card... for example "I love you more than I love the machine that made this card...but, only because you bought it for me."  Oh my goodness, how I laughed when I saw this. I also loved your comment Laura! "He definitely understands how serious this pledge of love is. :)" I am still laughing...so true!

Jessica Walker
Jessica said " It's a pull heart card that I created with the help of the nesting hearts in the silhouette store...then edited them by breaking and deleting segments to make them connect together." What an ingenious use of the Silhouette Studio Software!  Great Job!

And now for your viewing pleasure are a few others I really thought should be recognized.  Aren't these projects great?
